Each metatask model: the complete history of release date
VR is a fast-growing space, and is surprised every year by new innovations and technologies continue to be. Many major companies are trying to jump into the market with their own VR headsets, including those with Valve and PlayStation VR2 with Valve Index and PlayStation. But whether you are looking for headphones that are excellent for PC gaming or relatively cheap, the Meta Quest series has always been a very reliable choice for many.
With so many headphones released over the years, it has been difficult to outline as long as each Meta Quest headphone is released. Fortunately, we outlined the release date for each metatask, as well as information about the market each headset brings.
How many metatask headphones are there?
There are a total of Five different meta-task headphones issued. The first headset was released in 2019 and the latest release was released in 2024. This list includes the Oculus Quest, which was released before Oculus VR became a reality lab.
Oculus Quest- May 21, 2019
The Oculus Quest was released on May 21, 2019 and is the first entry-level standalone VR headset in the mission lineup. Both eyes have a pentagonal OLED display that provides 1440 x 1600 eye resolution and a 72Hz refresh rate. This mission has made many improvements from the Oculus Rift, leveraging Oculus Insight as an inside-out tracking system to track your gaming area. The headset utilizes modified Android source code as its OS.
Meta Quest 2-October 13, 2020
Oculus Quest 2, later renamed Meta Quest 2, was a solid upgrade of its predecessor. Task 2 brings an improved 120Hz refresh rate, swapping the old OLED panel with an LCD panel with a resolution of 1832 x 1920 per eye. This headset also brings a new third-generation Oculus touch controller, which provides a huge increase in battery life and new designs.
Meta Quest Pro- October 25, 2022
The Meta Quest Pro is Meta’s first attempt at making high-end mixed reality headsets. Metadata packages are in many high-tech features such as eye tracking and facial tracking, as well as local dimming to improve contrast. Quest Pro also brings the Touch Pro Controller, which provides a number of upgrades to Quest 2’s existing Oculus touch controller. As of 2024, Quest Pro was stopped by Meta after poor sales and failed to capture expected adoption rates.

Meta Quest 3 – October 10, 2023
When Meta Quest 3 was first released on October 10, 2023, the quality and performance of both quality and performance were greatly improved. The headphones are thinner than their predecessors, although the resolution per eye is increased by 30% for a clearer visual effect. The Meta Quest 3 also brings a new custom-designed pancake lens, which paves the way for many headphone improvements. Mixed reality also becomes a real focus, allowing the game to blend virtual and face-to-face environments.

Meta Quest 3s- October 15, 2024
The latest model in the mission lineup, the Meta Quest 3s, brings many of the best features of Mission 3 at a new lower price. The Quest 3s is thicker than the Mission 3, which is mainly due to the use of a Fresnel lens that is larger than the pancake lens used in Mission 3. To cut costs, the Quest 3S has a lower resolution display and sticks with the original resolution of Task 2, but with the performance of Task 3. Compared to the $499 asking price of the Meta Quest 3, the Mission 3S is a reliable entry-level option for $299.

When will the next metatask come out?
With the latest release of Meta Quest 3s, we expect Meta Quest 4 will be released sometime in October 2026 based on previous releases. This will match the gap between Meta Quest 2 and 3, giving Meta time to develop headphones that can provide significant upgrades.
